Welcome to the Hattie Redmond Women & Gender Center

The Hattie Redmond Women & Gender Center (HRWGC) serves as a campus focal point for projects directed at addressing women's issues on campus, in the community-at-large, and globally. As an open community of leaders inspiring change, we provide advocacy, resources, and opportunities to transform ideas into positive action and reality.

We welcome everyone to join us – even from a distance. If you would like to be connected to our resources from afar, please let us know, and we will work to include you in our efforts.

Our Herstory

The Oregon State University Hattie Redmond Women & Gender (formerly known as the Women's Center), established in 1973, offers learning experiences that help women transform themselves and society. Its educational programs reflect the diverse views of women from all walks of life.

The center provides advocacy, support, programs, resources and opportunities to translate concerns into action.

Since the early 1970s, universities throughout the U.S. have opened Centers to respond to inequities experienced by women both in-and outside the classroom.

A large body of research has clearly documented sex discrimination in educational institutions. Addressing issues of widespread violence against women, particularly acquaintance rape, is another reason women's centers exist on university campuses.

The Center has space for meetings, study, programs and discussion, with an approximate capacity of 60-70. It serves as a resource and information clearinghouse and offers advocacy, support, and other services to women and men, regardless of age, race, ethnicity, religion, disability, sexual orientation, or socioeconomic status.

The Center is staffed by the Center Director and a number of student-staff. The Center does offer internship opportunities as well. Furthermore, the work of the HRWGC is guided by an Advisory Committee comprised of students, faculty, staff, and community members. Please use the links to the left to learn more about our staff and Advisory Committee, as well as how to receive regular updates on Center programs and initiatives, to reserve our space for a class or meeting, or to ask a question via email.

Dear Survivors,

We love you. We support you. We are here to advocate with you.

We are writing to reaffirm, again and always, our commitment to believing and supporting survivors of sexual and interpersonal violence in our OSU community, across all identities and experiences. We recognize that the constant influx of media around campus sexual violence has a significant impact on our community; the recent news might be feeling inescapable, overwhelming, or triggering/activating. You may be holding feelings of anger, sadness, and betrayal. We want to remind you that it is normal to be experiencing any number of feelings surrounding this flood of distressing news about trauma and violence - those reactions are real and they deserve to be acknowledged and taken seriously. Your stories and experiences are valid, and we are here to support you and your healing, no matter how that looks.
