International Women’s Issues Speakers Series:  Documentary Screening – Finding Face w/ Dr. Patti Duncan
4/5, 5:30-7p @ Willamette West in Valley Library

Finding Face details the controversial case of Tat Marina, who was attacked with acid in Cambodia in 1999. At 16, Marina was a rising star in Phnom Penh's karaoke music scene. She was coerced into an abusive relationship with Cambodia's Undersecretary of State, Svay Sitha, and subsequently attacked with acid. The film contextualizes acid violence as both a human rights violation and a gendered form of violence. Marina, who was granted asylum to enter the U.S., struggles to emerge from a shattered self-image and escape a constant state of fear. She breaks her long silence with the hope that she can gain some form of justice, if not in the judicial system then at least in the court of public opinion.

Patti Duncan is associate professor of Women’s Studies at OSU where she specializes in transnational feminist theories and movements, women of color studies, and Asian Pacific American women’s writings. She is the author of Tell This Silence: Asian American Women Writers and the Politics of Speech, and numerous articles about women of color, feminist pedagogies, transnational feminisms, and the effects of militarism on women.

International Women’s Issues Speakers Series:  Finding Immigrant Mothers-to-Be Justice in the Clinic - Intersectionality in Immigrant Obstetrics
5/3, 5:30-7pm @ Willamette West in Valley Library.

Very little is known about provider-patient interaction in cross-cultural medicine, especially in the matter of women’s health. Dr. Mirabelle Fernandes-Paul's case study examines cross-cultural medical interactions between immigrant women of various ethnicities/socioeconomic classes, and clinic personnel in a rapidly growing Midwestern town. Symbolic interaction, as well as acculturation and feminist theories were used to frame the study’s findings.

The research of Dr. Fernandes-Paul revealed added stressors of pregnancy and new motherhood that are unique to positions of intersectionality, occupied by all of the immigrant women in this study. Language, race, socioeconomic backgrounds, cultural beliefs and behaviors were all, among many other factors, contributing to the underlying unequal power differential that marks the interactions between clinic personnel and immigrant women.  This study also unearths the muddiness that ails our medical system and how health care providers find themselves at the crossroads of fairness and compassion while working through the unique dilemmas posed by cross-cultural medicine.

Dr. Fernandes-Paul serves as Program Associate and Assistant to the director for the Women’s Advancement and Gender Equity Office, and serves on the boards of Crossroads International, President's Commission on the Status of Womens (PCOSW) and the Sexual Assault Response & Prevention Alliance (SARPA). She joined OSU in May 2008 after receiving her doctorate in Leadership, Policy and Administration from the University of St. Thomas, Minnesota.
