Dear Friends–

Welcome to Diversity & Cultural Engagement (DCE). If we have not yet had the chance to welcome you to DCE and Oregon State University in person, welcome! DCE is many places, spaces, and moments across Oregon State University. Whether you find yourself in one of our seven cultural resource centers, in our central office in the Student Experience Center (Room 306), at a retreat off-campus, at a workshop, or listening to a speaker, we sincerely hope you feel the warmth of our welcome.

At DCE, we are a hub of culturally diverse student engagement and success. We support students’ abilities to fashion a better self and world. Whether you hail from right here in Oregon, one of the sovereign nations contained within the state, another state in the US, or from Pakistan, Indonesia, Ghana, or one of many other places across the globe, DCE strives to ensure that your Oregon State experience is an enriching one.

Together we aspire to create an inclusive community, where all individuals can fully engage their gifts and talents, and where we can dream of a more just future. We hope you will join us in sharing your hopes, cultural traditions, intellectual passions, ideas, curiosities, and successes. We also hope you find us when you need support, have a problem to work through, or just need someone to listen to you.

We have four core outcomes: critical inquiry, equalized academic success, community engagement, and transformative learning. We accomplish this through mentoring student leaders, developing educational programs, and engaging in dialogues that help us clarify our values and commitments. All of our work is rooted in love, as author bell hooks described it, “To be loving we willingly hear each other's truth and, most important, we affirm the value of truth telling. Lies may make people feel better, but they do not help them to know love.” We hope you will share your truth with us and ours with you.

In Love and Solidarity,

The DCE Team

About DCE

Our Purpose

Being an OSU student means more than going to class. It also means cultivating the skills you need to change the world. Diversity & Cultural Engagement is your platform for collaborating to build an inclusive, just community. Enriched by differences, our programs and initiatives empower students to develop multiple perspectives and foster self-awareness.

We strive to swim against the current to challenge societal norms–where needed conversations are often uncomfortable–embracing creativity and critical thinking along the way. At DCE, we collectively transform ourselves to make a better world.

Our Aspirations

Together, we aspire to create an inclusive community, where all individuals can fully engage their gifts and talents, and where we can dream of a more just future. We hope you will join us in sharing your hopes, cultural traditions, intellectual passions, ideas, curiosities, and successes. We also hope you find us when you need support, have a problem to work through, or just need someone to listen to you.

OUR FOCUS AREAS

As a result of focus groups with student staff members, DCE identified the following six focus areas of our work:

  • Academic Success

  • Community & Sense of Belonging

  • Identity Development

  • Leadership

  • Social Justice

  • Well Being

Our physical spaces and the programs we create all contribute to these focus areas. Through collaboration with campus resources, we are committed to enhancing our support of students in each area.
